Rosco Jr!
Strong, chunky, gloriously loud.
Bold Attitude & New Narratives ❣
Victor Andrew Caruso joined Photo-Lettering Inc. in the mid-1950s, where he reimagined Paul Renner's iconic 1920s design. His 1960 version featured an extra large lowercase, creating letterforms as if the technology of film and phototypesetting had existed in Renner’s era.
Die Schrift der Zeit. Neue Typographie ● Kreis, ■ Quadrat, ▲ Dreieck

Rosco Jr is a bouncy, brassy and poco-loco geo-grotesque. Technical, but not perfect, it’s a punchy mash up drawing on iconic geometric sans of the 1930s and how they were reimagined in the 60s.

Although it draws on Erbar and Renner, Rosco Jr’s heart is in what those faces became later: the bold display styles of the phototypesetting era reimagined Fette Kabel and Futura Maxi with short caps and cropped ascenders.

To its collision of humanist strokes with the sharp, static anatomy of grotesques, Rosco Jr adds a playful tension between compact caps and wide lowercase with a tall x-height; between unfussy letterforms and the precision of Swiss execution. All of that pushed into a bold, heavy sans aesthetic — even in the light weights.

In short, Rosco Jr is strong and funky, inflated and chunky. It’s tailored for supersized typography turned up to 11. Built for vivid brands, big shelf presence and text that stops the scroll. On screen, it shines in hero headlines, H2s, and UI labels that need weight.

Swinging from italic to backslanted angles with a variable slant axis, Rosco offers geometry in motion. Circular dots and counter shapes bounce elliptically, stretch, squeeze and stay always, always slightly off-balance.

Jam packed with an extensive Latin character set and all the usual OpenType essentials. Tabular figures, oldstyle figures, localised alternates, and flip the vibe with the beautifully off stylistic variants: the double-storey a, the humanist s and 3, or the brutalist k and r.
Chunky funky Rosco Jr doesn’t ask for attention. It takes it.
