Ever wondered which books, platforms, and websites highlight the work of women in type? We’ve put together a small collection of inspiring projects, publications, and resources that celebrate the contributions of women in the world of type.

Women in Type Project
Women in Type project studied the lives and careers of women who worked in type drawing offices at two major British typeface companies (Monotype and Linotype) between 1910 and 1990. The project aims to finally recognize the women whose names and contributions have long been overlooked. These women played a key role in the creation of well-known typefaces like Arial, Gill Sans, and Centaur, and consistently demonstrated remarkable skill and craftsmanship.

How Many Female Type Designers Do You Know? I Know Many and Talked to Some!
How Many Female Type Designers Do You Know? I Know Many and Talked to Some! by Yulia Popova highlights the contributions of women in type design. It presents research on gender disparities in the field, supported by statistics and data, and includes biographies of women who worked in type design during the 19th century. The book also features interviews with female type designers, showcases typefaces created by women, and explores the gender imbalance within the type design industry.

Alphabettes
Alphabettes is a quite well known platform for showcasing work, commentary, and research in lettering, typography, and type design. The open network exists to support and promote the contributions of women and nonbinary people in these fields. In September 2025 they will publish a book called Alphabettes Soup, that showcases 10 years of feminist-based approaches to type research, design, and community-building.

flint*ype
flint*ype is a platform, archive, and curated collection aimed at making typefaces created by FLINTA* (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, agender) designers from across the globe more accessible. By supporting marginalised designers in graphic design, flint*ype amplifies their work, ensures they gain visibility, and preserves their contributions in the history of design. It is an ongoing project by by Lilot Kammermeier, Sophia Krayc, Coco Lobinger and Hannah Witte, with the technical support of Laila Kamil.

FEMME TYPE
FEMME TYPE by Amber Weaver is an all-female publication created in response to the underrepresentation of women in the design industry. The book passionately celebrates and showcases the work of talented, international women in the field of type, featuring essays, type designs, and typographic projects.
