Paul Eslage

Having begun his association with TypeMates as their first intern, Paul continues to work on custom fonts and font-related graphics, showcasing their font collection in both high-quality printed materials and striking motion graphics.

Born into a family of photographers, Paul discovered his creative side at an early age. Before he became interested in graphic design, he lived out his great love of music by playing drums in various bands.

During his bachelor studies at Münster School of Design Paul focused on communication design and worked on various magazine, branding and exhibition projects. There he also attended Jakob’s type design course, which ignited his passion for designing letters. After a type design internship at TypeMates, he attended the master’s program in communication design at the Department Design of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. There he deepened his knowledge of flexible visual systems through motion and type.

In his master thesis Type Follows Identity, he combined his interests in both visual identities and type design, investigating the individualization of letterforms in a metamodern era. This theoretical research resulted in his typeface design Phono, a sound-reactive Variable Font inspired by the human voice as an identity-forming feature.
